History: Hilton Budapest opened on January 1st, 1977, at a historic site on the Royal Castle Hill in Buda, the medieval heart of the Hungarian Capital. Through ingenious architectural planning several portions of the walls of a 13th century Dominican monastery  that originally stood on the site, have become integral parts of the outwardly modern hotel. Foundations of the new hotel walls were laid only after archaeologists and officials from the Hungarian Committee for the Preservation of Historical Monuments had cleared, consolidated and restored what had been uncovered. Among the finds were the remains of a 13th-century Dominican Church, an abbey with its sanctuary in excellent condition, a Dominican monastery topped by the Church Tower named after St. Nicholas, a well eight meters deep bearing King Matthias’ coat-of arms, and Gothic cellars – now all parts of Hilton Budapest. Also uncovered was the facade of a Jesuits’ College dating back to 1688, which is today the hotel’s main entrance. In the restored cloister of the monastery various finds – unearthed by archaeologists during the hotel’s construction – are exhibited. The oldest relic of all is a Roman milestone displayed in the 13th-century cloister, which marked the boundary of the Roman Empire along the Danube 2000 years ago.
